Alternative medicine, defined
by a study in the Journal of the American Medical Association
as interventions that are neither widely taught in medical
schools nor generally available in U.S. hospitals.1
They include relaxation techniques, herbal medicine, massage,
chiropractic, spiritual healing by others, homeopathy,
hypnosis, biofeedback, and acupuncture. An estimated 28.9
percent of U.S. adults used at least one CAM therapy in
"the past year," with use most prevalent among women,
persons aged 35 to 54 years, persons with an educational
attainment of 16 or more years, and in conjunction with
conventional medical services.2 Licensed practitioners
of alternative medicine include acupuncturists, chiropractors,
and massage therapists. Data are available in Hawai'i
only for those professions licensed by the state.
