| In 1995, general surgery was the third
most frequent reason for hospitalization. In 2006, general
surgery dropped to the fourth most frequent reason for
hospitalization. General surgery inpatient cases, which
account for approximately 9 percent of all hospitalizations,
increased 7.8 percent between 1995 and 2006. High-volume
surgeries include laparoscopic cholecystectomy (gall bladder
removal), appendectomy, and major intestinal procedures. |
