Maternity and newborn services together consistently account for more than one-fourth of all hospitalizations statewide. After decreasing for many years, maternity and newborn discharges increased approximately 11 percent between 2001 and 2006.  However, relative to the total population (hospitalizations per 1,000 population), maternity and newborn hospitalizations decreased 5 percent between 1995 and 2006.
