| Lower Emergency
Department (ED) Visit Rates for Hawai`i: High
rates of use of an ED (rather than a lower-level care
setting) may reflect real or perceived lack of options
for treatment, lack of a primary care provider, inability
to pay for services in another setting, or over-estimation
of the seriousness of the illness. Between 1990 and 2003,
Hawai'i's ED visits per 1,000 population increased 32
percent; the U.S. figure increased 10 percent. Hawai'i's
utilization of the ED remains significantly below that
of the United States. |
