County of Residence Differences: Hospitalization rates based on county of residence vary with Kaua'i County's rates being the highest in the state (112 per 1,000 population) and Honolulu County's rate the lowest (87 per 1,000 population). Between 1995 and 2006, the rate of hospitalization increased in Maui County (1 percent) and kauai County (3 percent), while it decreased in Hawai'i County (6 percent decrease)and Honolulu County (1 percent decrease). Hawai'i's hospitalization rate of 91 discharges per 1,000 population in 2006 was well below the U.S. rate of 132.
