DEMOGRAPHICS - Youth Population in Hawai'i
Elderly Population Growth  |  Youth Population Growth
Hawai`i vs. U.S. Youth Trend: At statehood, in the midst of the post-World War II baby boom, youth aged 0-19 years represented 43 percent of Hawai'i's population and 38 percent of the nation's population. By 2006, as a result of both declining birth rates and the aging of the baby boomers, Hawai'i's youth population dropped to 26 percent of the total, roughly equivalent to the national proportion of 27 percent.

Youth Trend in the Counties: Since 1970, all of the counties experienced a decrease in the youth proportion of their population--from approximately 39 percent of their population being less than 20 years old to less than 30 percent.

Projections: By 2030, youth will represent approximately one fourth of both Hawai'i's and the nation's populations.
