The county pyramids clearly show that the 20-40 age group is reduced in size on the Neighbor Islands. One reason for this is that during this age range, people attend college or begin their careers on the mainland or in Honolulu. It must be noted, however, that military personnel stationed in Honolulu, who are disproportionately in this age group, also contribute to the expansion of the 20-29 age group.
In addition, the Neighbor Islands tend to have a higher proportion of individuals aged 45 and older. This signals a need to examine the distribution of health resources as a much older population grows on the Neighbor Islands.
