County death rates rose steadily from 1980 to 2006. Honolulu
experienced the greatest increase, rising 49 percent.
Kaua 'i experienced a 25 percent increase in its death
rate while Hawai'i and Maui experienced increases of 28
percent and 12 percent, respectively. These increases
are a reflection of the increasing proportion of elderly
in the population.
